The A330 MRTT is based on the latest successful ‘big twin’ aircraft of the Airbus fly-by-wire family. The huge basic fuel capacity of the standard A330-200 means that no additional tanks are needed to give air-to-air refuelling performance that far exceeds its nearest competitors.
The A330 MRTT can be provided with a combination of wing pod and/or fuselage hose and drogue units and/or the EADS CASA advanced refuelling boom system (ARBS). The boom is controlled from a console located in the cockpit, which also has provision for a mission planning system.
As the A330 MRTT does not need auxiliary fuel tanks, the entire cargo bay is available for freight, with the possibility of incorporating LD3 or LD6 containers, military pallets and/or any other type of load device in use today.
The A330 MRTT is being considered for Multi Role Tanker Transport mission requirements throughout the world. In fact the A330 MRTT has won all international tanker competitions with contracts signed by the governments of Australia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The U.K. Ministry of Defence signed a 27 year air refueling contract with the EADS-led AirTanker consortium. The US Pentagon and the US Air Force selected the KC 45A, based on the A330 MRTT as well, as the future air to air refueling aircraft for the US forces.
