Inmarsat and Astrium sign Alphasat I-XL satellite contract

London - Inmarsat (LSE:ISAT), the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications, has awarded a contract to the European satellite leader Astrium for the Alphasat I-XL satellite to augment its Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service. Alphasat will be one of the world’s largest telecommunications satellites and Inmarsat expects its investment in the satellite - excluding insurance - will be will be in the region of €260 million.

Astrium mobilises to tackle global warming

Paris - At the beginning of May 2007, Astrium launched a company-wide appeal for ideas to combat global warming, inviting applications from all its sites in five countries. Over 380 suggestions were received via the intranet, and Astrium CEO François Auque just awarded prizes for the ten best ideas.

Astrium is new DFKI partner

Bremen - Astrium has become a partner of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). “Our involvement in the DKFI has launched a highly promising co-operation on scientific research and development activities in Bremen. The existing skills and knowledge of the two partners ideally complement one another when it comes to the development of new intelligent systems for future space missions,” Astrium Deutschland’s CEO Evert Dudok said in Bremen on Thursday.

Astrium wins study for new Vega upper stage

Bremen - Astrium has won a contract from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne to investigate concepts for a new upper stage for the European launcher Vega. The project is named “Venus” (Vega New Upper Stage). Currently under development, Vega is a small European launch vehicle which is scheduled for first launch in 2009. The study now awarded to Astrium is worth roughly half a million euros and will run for a period of 18 months.

Arianespace orders 35 more Ariane 5 launchers from Astrium

Le Bourget - Today at the Paris Air Show, Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace, and François Auque, Chairman of Astrium, signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning the production of 35 Ariane 5 launchers, in addition to the batch of 30 Ariane 5 launchers ordered in 2004. The signing ceremony was attended by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, along with Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of the European Space Agency and Yannick d’Escatha, President of French CNES space agency.

Real-time LOLA demonstrations on the French Defence Procurement Agency stand at Le Bourget

Le Bourget - Real-time laser optical links are being demonstrated live at the Paris Le Bourget airshow on the Délégation Générale pour l’Armement (DGA) stand. The link, via an airborne Mystère 20 aircraft in the south of France and a geostationary satellite, is making it possible to achieve two-way communication between Le Bourget and the aircraft. The team on the DGA stand is in permanent contact with the flight crew. Exceptionally clear footage of the cabin and countryside below is being shown on screens on the stand, proving the operational performance of this kind of laser optical link. These demonstrations are subsequent to a flight test campaign and a real-time demonstration which was successfully performed in front of French Army representatives on 30 May 2007 in Toulouse.

Astrium rockets into space tourism

Paris - Astrium has unveiled a revolutionary new vehicle for space tourism at a special VIP event in Paris ahead of the Le Bourget Airshow. This business jet sized vehicle is designed to carry four passengers 100 km up into space giving more than three minutes of "zero G" or weightlessness. Guests at the Paris event were shown a full sized mock-up of the forward section of the revolutionary craft including its Marc Newson designed cabin.

Astrium to build Mercury Probe - BepiColombo

Friedrichshafen - Astrium is set to build the Mercury probe BepiColombo on behalf of the European Space Agency, ESA. ESA’s scientific programme decision-making body, the “Science Programme Committee” (SPC) agreed to award this order to Astrium, Europe’s largest space company, following the decision of ESA’s Industrial Policy Committee in January this year. The industrial contract is worth approximately 330 million euros. BepiColombo is scheduled to begin its journey to Mercury in 2013.

Bremen - Arianespace and Astrium Space Transportation have decided to increase the Ariane 5 production rate. The launchers will be produced in the most powerful version, Ariane 5 ECA, in a stabilized configuration that will guarantee both reliability and economies of scale. By increasing the production rate, Arianespace will be able to keep pace with growing demand in the launch services market, on which Arianespace holds a leading role with a market share of more than 50%.

Flight Model of the SMOS payload, built by EADS Astrium in Spain, ready for final testing at ESA

Madrid - The EADS Astrium built payload for SMOS, The MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis) instrument is set to leave Spain following final integration and handover to ESA. The payload will undergo exhaustive testing at ESTEC, the ESA test centre, expected last for most of 2007 before launch due early in 2008.
