Automated manufacturing of preforms for composite structures by robot assisted braiding. Up to 216 carbon fibre yarns are placed around a core to form a net shaped fibre structure with optimised reinforcing fibre geometry. By Appropriate impregnation processes make possible cost-effective manufacturing of high performance composite structures.

Ariane 5 Upper Stage or Third Stage EPS. EADS Astrium is responsible for the development, integration and launch preparation of the complete third stage EPS in the Ariane-5 program including the third stage Aestus thrusters. Filled with up to ten tons of liquid fuel EPS can be ignited twice in order to position a further payload at another location.

Radar Anechoic Chamber / Electro Magnetic Control. This anechoic chamber (15m*5m*5m) is used for measurements from 1 GHz to 40 GHz, and for payloads of about 50 kg. It is especially used for the characterization of materials and structures for stealth applications, as well as for antenna characterizations. This mock-up is used for the validation of the electromagnetic software developments, and in this case the software "ASERIS antenna placement". Installed in the anechoic chamber, various configurations of antennas are studied to compare numeric simulations and experimental simulations.

Acoustic labor in Ottobrunn. The compliance with noise regulations at airports is a very critical issue for aerospace industry. The launch of turbofan engines with a high bypass ratio reduce significantly the overall perceived noise level of commercial aircrafts.EADS-CRC investigates the physics of the noise generating process of the tonal fan and develops new active, passive and adaptive concepts to meet the demands of the future. These concepts comprise multi channel Active Noise Control, multi degree of freedom liners and new resonator strategies.

Using the experimental setup, an EADS research scientist demonstrates the principle of the multi reflex cell of a Laser Ion Mobility Spectrometer (LIMS). A laser beam made visible by artificial smoke is reflected several times by mirrors. This increases the ionisation efficiency and therefore the sensitivity of the artificial nose.

Aerodynamic research is tending towards the development of an adaptive wing that can constantly adjust its geometry to accommodate given flight conditions. Novel aerodynamic wing flaps: narrow, movable flaps on the trailing edge of an aircraftÕs wing redirects the airflow downwards and produces greater lift. The mini-TEDs can contribute to noise reduction and help lower pollutant emission.

The weather satellite Metop provides data for medium-term weather forecasts and long-term climate and environmental research. MetOp-A, the first member of a new family of three European satellites designed to monitor the atmosphere from Low Earth Orbit, was launched from Kazakhstan on 19 October 2006. The next two MetOp satellites will be launched at five-year intervals. In total, the programme will be operational for at least 14 years, each satellite having an expected lifetime of five years.
