EADS wins multi-million-dollar contract from the U.S. Navy

Munich - In the USA, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) can achieve significant success on the largest defence market in the world. The U.S. Navy has awarded EADS a contract (volume: 11.9 million US-dollar) for the delivery of high-quality electronics for radar system (AN/APG-65) equipment for the U.S. Navy F/A 18 Hornet aircraft. This was announced by EADS on Friday in Munich. The radar system for the Hornet carrier aircraft was developed by Hughes (today Raytheon). Following some joint developments, it will be manufactured under licensed construction by the EADS Airborne Systems Unit in Ulm.

Dr. Thomas Enders, head of the Defence and Civil Systems Division and member of the EADS Executive Committee: "We are enormously pleased about this success as, firstly, it is still rare for a European company to gain ground on the US defence market and, secondly, because this order was won against stiff competition. The U.S. Navy's decision emphasises the competitiveness of EADS on the defence technology market with the highest competition intensity world-wide. We are confident that the U.S. market will open further. We will continue to expand our presence in the USA, as well as our partnerships with U.S. defence companies".
"This order is significant for our Radar Technology Competence Centre in Ulm", says Johann Heitzmann, member of the Executive Board of Dornier GmbH and president of the Airborne Systems Unit. "It covers the years 2001 and 2002 and secures highly-qualified jobs." Production preparation for licensed construction of the AN/APG-65 radar equipment began as early as 1987 upon the German Air Force's decision in favour of this radar system during the upgrading of the German F-4 Phantom aircraft. Thus, this national order was an important prerequisite for today's export success. AN/APG-65 is a modern "Multi-Mode Pulse Doppler Radar" allowing target acquisition in the air and target detection on the ground as well as the employment of Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM).
