Update for the Geogrid-Viewer 3.2 Q: Why is there no Tooltip display after the update? A: The Tooltip can be configured after the update and may be set under Settings//Tooltip. When Geogrid ends, the settings are saved and are available when next called up.
INSTALLATION
Map data on hard disk Q: How can I save map data on the hard disk and make use of it? A: The Top50 Version 3 and 4 do not support hard disk installation of map data. In order to use map data from the hard disk, we recommend adopting the following approach: First, create a folder on the hard drive e.g. “D:\Data\Top50”, then copy the entire content of the CD. If you have not yet installed the program, start Setup from the CD and follow the instructions there. The Geogrid Logo appears and a message is displayed alerting you to the fact that the map drive was not found. Now open the item “Directories” in the “Settings” menu and add the new pathway (e.g. D:\Daten\Top50).
No Explorer tree in “Directories” Q: Why is there no Explorer tree in the “Directories” dialog? A: If a different drive designation has been selected for the C: drive, no Explorer tree is displayed in the “Directories” dialog. The publisher’s hotline can provide you with a patch if necessary.
PROGRAM FUNCTIONS
PDA Q: Can I use the Top50 maps on the PDA? A: The Geogrid® PDA Viewer Software can be used to transfer data from the Geogrid® product range Top10, Top25, Top50, Top200, etc. from the PC to the PDA. After you have registered Online-Shop NRW , you can download the software against payment of a charge. You will find an extensive description here.
Launch Dynamic Perspectival View (DPV) Q: : What do I do if the DPV doesn’t start? A: If the error message "Required OpenGL functionality is not available" appears, OpenGL can be emulated with the “opengl32.dll”, so that the DPV also runs with graphics cards that don’t yet support this standard. The .dll must be copied into the bin directory of the application. You can obtain this .dll from the publisher’s hotline.
Scrolling with the mouse wheel Q: Why does scrolling with the mouse wheel not operate on some computers? A: To date, there’s no “genuine” mouse wheel support in Geogrid products. Operation of the mouse wheel is purely coincidental, depending on the mouse driver installed. The next version of Geogrid (e.g. in the Top50 Version 5) will include scrolling with the mouse wheel and the “hand symbol” for moving the map.
Converting overlays from Geogrid Viewer Version 1.0 Q: How can I import old overlays into the latest Geogrid Viewer Version? A: If necessary, the publisher’s hotline will provide you with an overlay converter for transferring overlays from Version 1. This converter will enable you to convert files in stack processing.
Printing problems with HP Deskjet 1220 C Q: How can I solve my printing problems with the HP Deskjet 1220 C? A: In addition to the installed driver, the driver of the predecessor model HP1120 is uploaded. The 1120 driver provides a colour spectrum on the 1220C printer that is still quite usable even though the colour spectrum deviates slightly from the spectrum of the 1220C driver. You can access this driver here.
Print legend Q: How can I print the legend? A: Printing the legend is not envisaged on the current software version. This will be possible on the next Geogrid Viewer Version (e.g. in the Top50 Version 5)
Drawing database objects Q: The program crashes when drawing database objects. What should I do? A: The Geogrid crashes if several database objects are selected with “Draw all” for display and they are displayed with bitmaps from the database on the map. This error has been corrected in the Geogrid Viewer 3.2. You should therefore carry out an update of our download page on this version.
Altitude data Q: Can I have altitude data displayed over several Top50 map terrains? A: The altitude data of the Top50 Series are not available for area-based displays over several altitude terrains (CDROMS).
NAVIGATION/GPS
New navigation sofware Q: Where do I find the current route planning and navigation software? A: We offer the new Geogrid Navigation software as time-limited download (Beta Version) for the existing Geogrid Viewer from Version 2.2. It comprises Geogrid Navigation and PlugIn NavTrax. The new navigation software is a further development of the PlugIn NavTrax: It supports other GPS receivers and contains the previous Geogrid GPS functions. The navigation software is an element of the next Geogrid Viewer (Top50 Version 5).
Link between GPS receiver and PC Q: Can I connect my GPS receiver via USB? A: A USB cable and the presence of USB connections are not yet adequate for exchanging data successfully. However, data transfer can be effected using a USB cable if a serial COM Port is emulated by the GPS receiver. The GPS data must be available in the NMEA 0183 format when data is called up online, so that Geogrid is in a position to evaluate these data.
Receiving and sending waypoint routes/tracks Q: How should I connect my GPS unit in order to call up or send waypoints/routes/tracks? A: In the new navigation software, data transfer from Computer to GPS Unit also operates via via USB for Garmin receivers. Although Suunto units can also be connected via USB, a COM interface is emulated here by the Suunto driver software. Installation of the Suunto driver is therefore a prerequisite for data transfer taking place.
Garmin Forerunner 301,302 Q: I have a Garmin Forerunner 301, 302. Downloading routes and tracks isn’t operating properly. A: The Garmin Forerunner uses a dedicated data format that isn’t compatible with the gpx format. If you call up data from Garmin Forerunner 201/301 and want to display it in Geogrid, we suggest the following procedure: Install the Garmin program MapSource (at least Version 6.9.1). The tracks recorded by the Forerunner (files with suffix .gdb) open in the MapSource program and save the data as a gpx file (GPS Exchange File). The .gpx file is then opened as a project and the tracks are displayed in the Geogrid. We recommend also applying this procedure with other Garmin units which transfer data in a special format (e.g. GPS data combined with training data).
Supported GPS units Q: Which GPS receivers can exchange data with the new navigation software? A: To date, the following units have been used in conjunction with the new navigation software: Garmin GPS 12 XL, Garmin eTrex, Garmin eTrex Vista C, Garmin GPSMap 60CS, GPSMap 60Cx, Suunto X9, Suunto 9i, Magellan eXplorist 210, Magellan Meridian. Other units can also be used which apply the Garmin data format.
Note: In the case of the GPSMap 60Cx, the transfer of data via USB only operates in the Online Tracking Mode after the Garmin Firmware has been updated.
Data exchange with Magellan units Q: How can I exchange waypoints/routes/tracks with the Magellan eXplorist...? A: In the case of Magellan units with their own hard disk, data is exchanged between PC and GPS via the functions Import/Export. The Magellan driver software must be installed on the PC and the data transmission mode must be set on the GPS unit.
Setting the GPS receiver Q: What settings do I need on my GPS Receiver when I’m loading and sending routes/tracks/waypoints? A: When data is being uploaded/downloaded, the Garmin units must be set to GARMIN. In Online Mode, the GPS unit must be set to NMEA. The NMEA setting is also necessary for the Geogrid GPS function “GPS Track from receiver”.
Transferring OVL data to GPX Q: How can I transfer OVL data to the GPX format? A: Selected graphics of an Overlay can be transferred to navigation as waypoints or routes/tracks with the function “Import Navigation/Tools/selected graphics”. These can then be saved in GPX format with “Navigation/Project/Save”.
User rights Q: Do I have to start Geogrid in Administrator Mode to ensure that the navigation software functions? A: It’s sufficient to start up Geogrid in Administrator Mode once after the installation software has been installed, to enable entries to be made in the registry. You can then start Geogrid in user mode
Miscellaneous
Overlay formats Q: How can I receive format descriptions for overlay formats? A: You can obtain format descriptions for overlay formats from the publisher’s hotline on request.
Other operating systems Q: Will other operating systems be supported in the future? A: A Geogrid Version for Mac or Linux is not currently being planned.
