EADS N.V. - EADS provides more than $300,000 to Stanford University and the Georgia Institute of Technology for engineering research

EADS has contributed over $300,000 to fund advanced aerospace research, development and design activities at two U.S. universities, as well as the training of future aviation industry engineers. The new contributions were provided to professors and departments at Stanford University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, institutions recognized for their excellence in design, computer modeling and the application of new materials.

These contributions reflect EADS’ strategy to support the advancement of studies critical to the nation’s security and its aerospace sector. These most recent awards follow the company’s previous establishment of university scholarships in the states of Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina in 2006.

“We are pleased and proud to expand our educational partnerships with some of the country’s leading universities in the U.S.,” explained Ralph D. Crosby, Jr., EADS North America’s Chairman and CEO. “Our support will help broaden America’s capabilities in aerospace and defense, as well as assist in training new engineers who will respond to the industry’s challenges of tomorrow.” EADS CTO Dr. Jean J. Botti added, “As EADS pursues innovation across the Group, we recognize the importance of contributing to the continued revitalization of aerospace-related engineering in Universities, which are a primary research and technology partnering source for EADS.

A $138,000 contribution was provided to the Georgia Technology Research Institute to support research in the field of multifunctional materials. Researchers at the Institute are pursuing the development of lightweight, shock-resistant and adaptive materials that could be applied to next-generation aircraft.

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Aerospace Engineering also received a $100,000 contribution to fund aerospace design studies at the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering. This research work will focus on optimizing aircraft design in terms of airframes, structures and propulsion.

EADS’ $70,000 contribution to Stanford University will support computer modeling performed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering. This work is focused on improving the understanding of accumulated uncertainties during complex computer modeling, which is particularly important as aircraft design becomes increasingly reliant on computer-based “virtual” tools and modeling.
