EADS invests in the future with its 2006 EADS UK Technology Masters Award winners and sponsorship of the Science Museum

  • Six Awards valued at £5,000 each for British MSc students
  • Three-year partnership with Science Museum launched

London, 28  November  2006

EADS, the global aerospace and defence company, has announced a three-year sponsorship of the prestigious Science Museum and awarded EADS UK Technology Masters Awards to six of the UK’s brightest engineering students.

The students were presented their £5,000 awards by Dr Jean Botti, EADS‘s Chief Technical Officer at an event at the Science Museum in London to celebrate the new partnership.

The substantial sponsorship package will see EADS contribute to the Museum on three fronts – as a lead sponsor in the refurbishment of and upgrading of the popular Space Gallery, as sponsor for a series of Dana Centre events to stimulate interest in science among a wider audience; and with a temporary feature in the Antenna gallery in 2008.

The EADS UK Technology Masters Awards - created two year ago - were established to provide support to British post-graduate students studying for a one-year MSc in the fields of aerospace and space related science.

Now in its third year, six awards have been made, three to students from the University of Liverpool and three from Cranfield University. These universities have excellent reputations in one or more of the relevant fields and have demonstrated that the additional funds from the Awards will be invaluable in attracting MSc students to their courses.

After undergoing a thorough selection process co-ordinated by the Universities, the following six, top-class students have been selected:

Cranfield University

  • Alexander Bradley-(24, from Llangarron, Herefordshire) MSc Astronautics and Space Engineering
  • Andrew Fine- (24, from London) MSc Aerospace Dynamics
  • Jamie Mountain-(23 from Altofts, West Yorkshire) MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design

Liverpool University

  • Colm Devlin- (22, from Warren Point, County Down, Ireland) MSc Laser Engineering
  • Daniel Barclay- (22, from South Darenth, Kent) MSc Laser Engineering
  • Michael Bennett- (23, from Warrington, Cheshire) MSc in Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Technology

Commenting recently from the Science Museum, Dr Jean Botti said: “We were delighted to be at the Museum launching this important sponsorship. Additionally, it was appropriate to use the opportunity of the launch to present the Awards to six talented students. Science, engineering and technology provides the long-term intellectual capital that makes our business a success and it is through schemes and sponsorships such as these that we are able to foster interest in these areas. “

Commenting on the Awards, Professor Gareth Padfield, said: “We are proud that EADS has chosen to award students of the University of Liverpool their prestigious award for a second year. This is testament to the quality of our students and the demand for qualified aerospace engineers in the UK. Our ability to attract more students into the fields of aerospace and defence has been greatly supported by last year’s awards and we look forward to continuing this relationship with such a well regarded and forward thinking company.”

Robin Southwell, CEO of EADS UK, added: “It was a pleasure to meet some of the best young British engineers and scientists who will be developing the next generation of aviation and space technology. EADS is constantly on the look-out for talented young people like these to progress. We are delighted to support them and committed to investing in the future of British aerospace engineering. “
