Driver of change: EADS shows new business strength at 45th Le Bourget Aero Salon

Amsterdam, 10 June 2003

  • New structures for space and defence business introduced at Le Bourget
  • NETCOS is the most modern system for the simulation of complex scenarios
  • Eagle 1 UAV first time on display
  • EADS media events - timetable for Le Bourget

Well prepared for the challenges in a changing environment - that's how EADS is presenting itself at the 45th Le Bourget air show. The recent go-ahead for the A400M and Galileo programmes, the new industrial structures for the space and defence business, and the new concepts and technologies being presented at the EADS stand at Le Bourget provide a strong basis for future growth.

The flying display at the Le Bourget airfield near Paris will include the smallest member of the Airbus family - the A318 - and the longest Airbus - the A340-600. Eurocopter will be presenting literally the entire product range, from the small single-engine EC 120 "Colibri" to the military helicopters NH-90 and Tiger. EADS Socata will be flying the TBM 700 and the TB 20. Eurofighter, the world's most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, will impress the spectators with its breath-taking daily display. EADS Military Transport Aircraft Division will show a C-295 Persuader MPA/ASW equipped with the state of the art Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS).

The EADS stand in Hall 2A will see Europe's biggest aerospace company presenting a new concept for virtual testing, system design for new weapons systems, and for planning military missions. The system, called NETCOS (Network Centric Operations Simulator), simulates complex crisis management scenarios by presenting the interaction of a wide range of military units, for example in air defence against missile attacks. By combining all EADS defence units, NETCOS opens a window on the future of Network-Centric Operations. The demonstrator at Le Bourget, called CDSE, is the nucleus of the fully fledged NETCOS System.

The Eagle 1 Medium Altitude Long Endurance UAV system will be displayed for the first time in Le Bourget. EADS launched the development of Eagle 1 to meet the requirements of the French Air Force for real time intelligence. Eagle 1 is dedicated to the fulfilment of intelligence-gathering, reconnaissance and surveillance missions. The system combines the latest cutting-edge UAV technology which includes an automatic takeoff and landing system, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), a Day/Night Electro-Optic Suite and a Laser Designator. Eagle 1 had its first flight on June 2, 2003 and will be delivered to the French Air Force in 2004.

Another highlight at the EADS stand is the combined display of a Eurofighter Typhoon cockpit simulator, which is linked with the Mako Cockpit Demonstrator. Both devices can be either 'flown' individually or in joint operations.

EADS is a global aerospace and defence company and is the world's second largest in terms of revenues with EUR 29.9 billion in 2002. The group is a market leader in commercial aircraft, defence technology, helicopters, space, military transport and combat aircraft, as well as related services. It's family of leading brands includes commercial aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world's largest helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter, space company Astrium, and MBDA, the world's second largest missile company. EADS is the biggest partner in the Eurofighter consortium and heads the A400 M military transport aircraft program. The company has over 70 sites in Germany, France, Great Britain and Spain. It is active in many regions worldwide, including the U.S., Russia and Asia.
