Air New Zealand takes delivery of its tenth ATR 72-500Toulouse, 31 January 2003 Long time customer AIR NEW ZEALAND has taken delivery of its tenth ATR 72-500 ordered in October 2002. MOUNT COOK AIRLINES, based in Christchurch, which is fully owned by AIR NEW ZEALAND, will operate the aircraft. The ATR 72-500s, in a 66-seat configuration, operate services to a variety of tourist and business destinations within New Zealand and « Middle Earth ». AIR NEW ZEALAND started its ATR operations with the ATR 72-210 in 1995. AIR NEW ZEALAND's Vice President of Regional Airlines, Howard JELLIE declared « The ATR is particularly well adapted to respond to the 7% increase in domestic traffic. The outstanding economics of the ATR 72-500 have positively impacted our financial results which were above 100 million USD in 2002. » The ATR 72-500 was selected by the airline for its very competitive seat mile costs as well as for its environmental qualities. The low fuel consumption of ATR aircraft meets both external noise and gazeous emission level regulatory requirements with ample margins. AIR NEW ZEALAND is a member of STAR ALLIANCE which has a membership of 14 airlines in the world. STAR ALLIANCE currently operates a total of 66 ATR aircraft. Since the beginning of the programme, ATR has delivered 653 aircraft (369 ATR 42s and 284 ATR 72s) to more than 100 airlines in 60 countries. Toulouse, France-based ATR, has become the reference in the regional air transport market with its ATR 42 and ATR 72.
