EADS: Success as Naval Combat Systems Supplier

Multimillion Euro contract from Finnish Navy

Ulm, 26 June 2001

The Finnish Navy has awarded EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company a multimillion Euro contract as Combat System Prime Contractor and System Integrator and for the supply of the Combat Management System for the "Squadron 2000" programme.

As the company announced on Tuesday, the programme comprises two Fast Attack Craft Vessels and four Air Cushion Vehicles. The Combat Management System, newly developed by EADS' Systems & Defence Electronics business unit, is characterized by open system architecture and commercial infrastructure utilizing industrial standards and commercial-of-the-shelf software and hardware products. The application software is built up by proven components developed by EADS and the Finnish Industry, as substantial participation of the Finnish Industry is part of the agreement. "The use of commercial components is a crucial point in the development of defence electronics", underscores Dr. Stefan Zoller, President and CEO of EADS' Systems & Defence Electronics business unit, "because it alleviates further system adaptation and offers substantial growth potential at low cost and risk".

"The flexible system design of our Combat Management System enables efficient integration of sensors and weapons according to mission requirements," explains Bernhard Gerwert, Head of Naval and Ground Systems in EADS.

The company with this newly developed product enters a new dimension: EADS' combat management system is aiming at the accurate and fast-reacting fusion, analysis and transmission of great amounts of sensor data to guarantee the efficient deployment of ships and other resources within the framework of joint/combined operations, particularly in the complex threat scenario of littoral warfare. EADS thereby is promoting a technology change away from combat systems built around a central computer towards open and distributed network architectures. Thus, the system offers substantial growth potential regarding new tasks and keeps the inevitable modernisation effort over a ship's operational life of 30 years within justifiable limits. In the development of this new type of combat management system EADS capitalizes on its profound proficiency with command and control systems in general and on its participation in the German Frigate and Corvette programmes.

With revenues amounting to EUR 24.2 billion (2000) and 100,000 employees EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is the largest aerospace and defence company in Europe and number three worldwide.
