EADS has signed a contract worth almost € 8 million with the regional authorities for road construction and transport (Landesbetrieb Straßenbau und Verkehr) in Schleswig-Holstein to equip all federal highways, main roads, national roads and country roads in Schleswig-Holstein as well as the through roads in Hamburg including the Elbe Tunnel with a modern TETRAPOL digital radio network.
After a nationwide functional call for tender, EADS won the contract over three other competitors. The decision in favour of EADS was primarily due to the convincing technical and financial offer as well as the company's extensive experience in setting up digital radio networks for security authorities and organizations, local and intercity railway services, airports and industry. Also an influence on the decision was the positive experience in Rheinland-Pfalz, where a TETRAPOL network from EADS has been in successful operation on the federal motorways since 2003.
"We are delighted to have received this contract," said Jean-Marc Nasr, President of EADS Secure Networks. "The decisions in favour of EADS and the TETRAPOL technology demonstrate how important it is for the customers that their requirements are understood and met with a suitable offer. We are pleased that EADS, as the Systems House for digital radio technology, develops the various radio standards of TETRAPOL, TETRA and P25 and can offer each customer a tailored solution."
The current contract covers the delivery, set-up, installation and initial operation of base stations, masts, antenna units and technical facilities at 33 sites. Up until now a separate EADS radio network had been in operation for police, fire brigade and also radio transmission.
The delivery of the technology, which includes 163 handheld radio devices and 246 mobile radio devices, will commence in August 2006. The network is planned to be completed in November 2007.
This Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) will support the road construction authority in its diverse operation and maintenance activities, in the remaining road network as well in service tasks such as clearing and gritting roads in winter and lane and road closures following accidents. This will then enable regional and nationwide communication between road and highway maintenance agencies. Furthermore, with the aid of integrated applications such as GPS-based fleet management, available vehicles, machines and personnel can be put to more effective use. Efficiency is also increased thanks the safe and targeted coordination of personnel.
