EADS air traffic control radar successfully passes field testing

  • Surveillance system improves air traffic security
  • Advanced signal processing guarantees precision and reliability

Ulm, 10 May 2006

EADS has successfully completed extensive field testing of its newly developed ASR-S air traffic control radar. As the company announced on Wednesday, this paves the way for the modernisation of the whole military Air Traffic Control (ATC) System in service at German Bundeswehr Airbases which is encompassing the replacement of more than 20 radars.

The fully solid–state Air Traffic Control Radar ASR-S is designed to control and safeguard primarily military air traffic, even under adverse conditions of climate and high traffic density. All operationally critical sub-systems are redundant. The comprehensive signal processing and tracking safely supports control of typical military flight manoeuvres, such as formation flights, extreme fighter manoeuvres and hovering helicopters. Furthermore, the system incorporates comprehensive built-in test equipment for fast, accurate fault location. Thus, ASR-S guarantees near 100% availability.

"Military and civil air traffic control authorities throughout Europe are faced with a continually increasing air traffic density," explained Bernhard Gerwert, CEO of EADS Defence Electronics. "This situation requires a high-performance air traffic control system affording reliability, easily manageable logistics and comprehensive data exchange."

The ASR-S advanced signal processing technologies guarantee high precision with user-friendly display of refined data.

Integration of external information systems and other radar systems is made possible by high-performance network structures and links. Safety in controlled airspace is improved because of the ability of ASR-E to detect specifically light aircraft and hovering helicopters while significantly reducing the false target rate. Cost efficiency is accomplished by utilising commercial hardware and a modular systems architecture. The system also incorporates the MSSR 2000I Mode S secondary radar for automatic identification according to the current air traffic control standards.

EADS Defence Electronics is the Group´s Sensors, Avionics and Electronic Warfare House and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence & Security Systems Division (DS).
