EADS SPACE Transportation is the European space transportation and orbital infrastructures specialist. It designs, develops and produces Ariane launchers, the Columbus laboratory and the ATV cargo vessel for the International Space Station, atmospheric re-entry vehicles, as well as missiles for France's nuclear deterrent force, propulsion systems and space equipment. Created in June 2003, EADS SPACE Transportation is a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS SPACE, part of EADS, the European Aeronautic, Defence and Space Company.

EADS SPACE Transportation consolidates the EADS group's skills and expertise in space transportation and orbital infrastructures. It is a pivotal player in all European space programmes, with unrivalled expertise as industrial architect and prime contractor for major space and strategic defence programmes. The company's multidisciplinary teams leverage more than 40 years of experience in the development of complex systems, most within the scope of international co-cooperation programmes.

EADS SPACE Transportation is shareholder in several companies, the main ones are:

  • EADS Sodern – is a wholly owned subsidiary, specialist in space, optical and neutron activities.
  • CILAS - develops, manufactures and markets a wide range of lasers for both defence and civil applications. EADS-ST has a 63% stake in this European market leader in laser technology.
  • Arianespace - is the comercial launch service leader, operating and marketing the Ariane 5 launcher. EADS-ST currently has a 28% stake in this company.
  • Starsem – was formed together with Arianespace and the Russian Federal Space Agency in 1996 on the initiative of EADS-ST, which has a stake of 35%. Starsem is providing commercial launch services with the Soyuz launcher.
  • Eurockot Launch Services GmbH – EADS-ST is main shareholder with 51% with in Eurockot that is operating the Russian launcher Rockot, together with Khrunichev Space Center.
  • GIE Cryospace - 45% stakes in this company which manufactures the insulated tank of the Ariane 5 main cryogenic stage.

Launchers

Ariane 5

Sole prime contractor for the Ariane 5 system since May 2003, EADS SPACE Transportation is responsible for the delivery to Arianespace of a complete and fully-tested launcher, and manages all contracts associated with its manufacture. The company is also responsible for the production of all Ariane 5 stages, the vehicle equipment bay and flight software, along with a number of sub-assemblies.

The new heavy-lift version Ariane 5ECA, which is deemed to become the work horse of Arianespace for commercial launch services, is providing increased GTO payload capacity up to 9,500 kilogrammes for a single or dual launch. 12th February 2005, Ariane 5 ECA has been successfully launched from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Small and medium launchers

To complement Ariane 5’s launch capability, EADS SPACE Transportation has formed partnerships with the Russian space industry. The company is the main shareholder in Starsem and Eurockot Launch Services, the companies which market the Soyuz and Rockot launchers respectively (launched from Baikonur plus from French Guiana from 2007 on, and from Plesetsk), perfectly designed for smaller payloads to low or medium Earth orbits, and for interplanetary missions. EADS-ST is also subcontractor to the Italian company ELV for the development of the Vega launcher (GNC and flight software).

Future launchers

EADS SPACE Transportation is preparing for the next generation of European launch vehicles, to replace Ariane 5 towards 2020. System studies and technology demonstrators are underway, notably Phoenix and Pre-X for future expanded or reusible launch vehicles (Evrest, Hopper, etc.), with the aim to be incorporated in ESA’s Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP).

Defence Systems

Ballistic missiles

EADS-ST developed 5 generations of ballistic missiles since the 1960s. This unprecedented technology leadership gave rise to the Ariane launcher, and will also shape tomorrow’s spaceborne defence systems. EADS SPACE Transportation is prime contractor to DGA for the ballistic missile systems in France’s nuclear deterrent force, currently in charge of the development and production of the submarine-launched M45 and M51 missiles. EADS-ST also handles operation and maintenance, supports armed forces during firing exercises, and provides the ground facilities at the Ile Longue base.

Missile Defence

EADS SPACE Transportation has the array of technologies and skills to meet the security needs associated to a deployment of antimissile defence systems. It is based on long-standing leadership in ballistic missile, space transportation and orbital infrastructure systems. Capabilities span a broad range of disciplines: system engineering, defence systems integration, knowledge of the ballistic environment and flight testing, and the ability to construct and maintain exo-atmospheric (high-altitude) interceptors.

Orbital Systems

Space Stations

EADS SPACE Transportation is leading Europe’s contribution to the ISS: the company is prime contractor to ESA for two key elements of the ISS: the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) supply vessel and the Columbus Orbital Facility (COF).

ATV is the most challenging Space vehicle ever developed and built in Europe. ATV, which will be launched by Ariane 5, will carry out for the first time in European history a rendezvous and docking in Space. EADS SPACE Transportation is prime contractor for development and production of the ATV space segment. First ATV model “Jules Verne” is ending its development and will be launched in 2006 by an Ariane 5ES vehicle. A total of seven ATV missions are planned for the period up to 2013.

The design and development of Columbus draws upon expertise gained from Europe’s reusable Spacelab, a veteran of 22 Space Shuttle flights, developed by EADS-ST. It will be permanently docked to the ISS, operating for at least 15 years, after being carried by an US Space Shuttle in 2007. EADS-ST also designs microgravity research instruments for a wide variety of experiments.

Exploration

EADS SPACE Transportation is the only European company to control the whole of technologies on atmospheric re-entry. This technology is essential to allow the return of space vehicles on Earth or to undertake remote voyages towards other planets. The unrivalled experience of the company, in particular, on re-entry vehicles for the French nuclear deterrent force (FNS), the European space vehicle programme Hermes or the interplanetary probe Huygens, enabled the company to develop the ARD (Atmospheric Re-entry Demonstrator), Europe's first atmospheric re-entry vehicle, and to be present, today, on the Mars exploration programmes and the European New Generation Launcher projects.

Propulsion Systems and Equipment

Thrust chambers and attitude control systems for launch vehicles, satellites and space platforms are further areas of expertise at EADS SPACE Transportation.

EADS-ST hence offers an array of equipment for the space industry: antenna reflectors and structures for satellites, high pressure tanks, pyrotechnic equipment, thermal protection, and payload adapters.
