The Computer-Aided Ground Test System ‘ESAO’ (Essais au Sol Assistés par Ordinateur) developed by EADS TEST & SERVICES for the Airbus A380 has been installed on the first assembly station of the first A380 to start the aircraft functional integration tests.
In June, validation tests of the ‘ESAO’ system had been successfully conducted on the A380 “Iron Bird”; in particular, the good operation of the Digital Equipment Simulators (D.E.S.) and the link between the aircraft and the ‘Open World’ had been validated.
As the prime contractor for the ‘ESAO A380’, EADS TEST & SERVICES successfully developed the system specifications and managed its whole development until final implementation and validation while supplying the Digital Equipment Simulators.
Upgraded from the ‘ESAO’ systems already developed by EADS TEST & SERVICES for the Airbus A320 and A340, the ‘ESAO’ A380 incorporates state-of-the-art software such as Intranet, the Oracle database, real time systems and AFDX and CAN busses.
These technologies had not yet been implemented in ground test systems but the close and efficient co-operation between Airbus engineers, the EADS TEST & SERVICES team and the pool of suppliers made it a success.
‘ESAO’ is a fully automated and computerized ground test system able to perform all the aircraft ground testing tasks: preparation/programming, test management and test execution. It is used in the final assembly phase of the aircraft to check its functional integration.
The ‘ESAO A380’ test system will also be used by Airbus in Hamburg for the A380 cabin furnishing.
