The French defence procurement agency DGA chose EADS Astrium as a joint prime contractor for the development of the ESSAIM system. This demonstrator, based on 4 micro-satellites flying in formation through space, will analyze the electromagnetic environment on the ground in a number of frequency bands used exclusively for military communications. The ESSAIM program is a “turnkey” system, comprising the space segment, ground segment, satellite launch facilities and operations. The other partner in this program, Thales Airborne Systems, is contributing its electromagnetic systems expertise.
The national French provision agency DGA has decided for EADS Astrium as main contractor for the development of the system ESSAIM - Schwarm. The demonstrator, which is based on four micro-satellites flying in formation though the space, should record the electromagnetic environment of our planet in different frequency bands used exclusively for the military communication. The programme ESSAIM comprises in a turnkey system consisting of a space travel specific segment, a ground segment and satellite starting facilities and their operation. The other programme partner, Thales Airborne Systems, nets its competence in the area of electromagnetic systems.
