The exhibition of “Egypt’s Sunken Treasures”, is a truly unique show of items found and recovered in the course of Franck Goddio´s undersea expeditions - sponsored by the Hilti Foundation - off the Mediterranean coast of Egypt.
Around 500 artefacts are on view, most of them never before shown in public. They offer a glimpse at more than 1,500 years of Egyptian history. In addition to the amazing finds of historic value, the exhibition gives visitors a close-up view of the exciting, fascinating work of the divers and underwater archaeologists.
The Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin/Germany was the first setting for this remarkable exhibition of ancient civilizations. Now, the exhibition moved on to Paris/France where it is on display in the Grand Palais from the 9th of December 2006 until the 16th of March 2007.
Since the mid 1990s Goddio and his team in co-operation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt have located the remains of the fabled ancient harbour of Alexandria with parts of the royal quarter, the legendary lost city of Heracleion and parts of the city of Canopus. Among their important excavations were temples with cult objects. These ancient centres of learning, religion and international trade perished over 1,000 years ago: following a string of natural disasters they were engulfed by the sea.
