The guided missile manufacturer MBDA, in which EADS and BAE Systems (37.5% each) and Finmeccanica (25%) hold shares, receives the development contract for the Meteor air-to-air guided missile, which is worth € 1.86 billion. The corresponding procurement contract was signed by the six countries participating in this project. Meteor flies at four times the speed of sound and can combat aerial targets at a distance of more than 100 kilometres. It will be the main armament for the Eurofighter, Rafale and Gripen. Delivery is due in 2008.
18 December 2002: DGA places order worth €1.3 billion for the EADS M51 ballistic missile
From 2010, the missile will equip the next generation of nuclear submarines. EADS is acting as the industrial prime contractor and G2P – a joint venture by Snecma Propulsion Solide and SNPE – is prime contractor for the propulsion, working in cooperation with EADS.
20 November 2002: Gerhard Puttfarcken named new Head of Airbus Deutschland
Gerhard Puttfarcken is named Chairman of the Airbus Deutschland GmbH Executive Management Board with effect from 1 January 2003. He succeeds Hans-Joachim Gante, who is to become Managing Director of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI).
17 November 2002: EADS reconnaissance electronics complete successful first flight on board Global Hawk UAV
The first successful demonstration of an EADS ELINT (ELectronic INTelligence) sensor is carried out on board a U.S. Air Force Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle. This UAV was developed and built by Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems. The demonstration and flight tests were conducted by officials of the U.S. Air Force and the German Ministry of Defence at the Edwards Air Force Base, California.
29 October 2002: EADS Employee Share Programme for 2002 is an overwhelming success
Over 14,000 EADS employees took part in the EADS Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP) for 2002. The more than two million employee shares offered were oversubscribed by 80%, with orders being received for 3.6 million shares in total. Approximately 3.35% of EADS shares are now held by the company's employees.
16 October 2002: EADS nominates Fabrice Brégier as new Head of Eurocopter and Marwan Lahoud at MBDA
The current head of the guided missile manufacturer MBDA, Fabrice Brégier, has been named the new President and CEO of Eurocopter with effect from 1 April 2003. Brégier had headed Europe's largest guided missile manufacturer since January 1998. The new CEO at MBDA is Marwan Lahoud. Lahoud was previously Senior Vice President Mergers and Acquisitions at EADS.
11 October 2002: Hans Peter Ring becomes new CFO of EADS
Hans Peter Ring takes on his new task from 1 November 2002 and simultaneously becomes a Member of the EADS Executive Committee. He succeeds Axel Arendt, who moves to become Chairman of Rolls-Royce Deutschland. Previously, Ring was Senior Vice President Controlling.
8 August 2002: Germany places order for Taurus
The Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) places an order worth € 570 million with Taurus Systems GmbH for production of the Taurus KEPD 350 missile system. Taurus is planned as armament for the German Luftwaffe's combat aircraft Tornado and Eurofighter. Delivery will start in mid-2004.
7 August 2002: EADS appoints Ralph Crosby as Chairman & CEO of EADS North America
By making this appointment, EADS demonstrates that it has set its sights on the US market. Crosby was previously president of the Integrated Systems sector at Northrop Grumman. He will also be a member of the EADS Executive Committee.
1 August 2002: EADS acquires plant in Belgium, thus increasing its defence capacities
EADS takes over the Siemens plant at Oostkamp in Belgium. The former Siemens plant with its workforce of roughly 250 has already supplied the EADS Systems & Defence Electronics Business Unit with HF components for radar and communications systems for many years.
25 July 2002: Paradigm Secure Communications Ltd. founded
Paradigm Secure Communications Ltd. is to implement the British Ministry of Defence's Skynet 5 programme. Skynet 5 is the UK MoD's future military satellite communications system.
16 July 2002: Foundation stone laid for the Airbus A380 final assembly centre
Jacques Chirac, the French president, lays the foundation stone in Toulouse for the future A380 final assembly centre.
16 July 2002: FedEx signs contract for ten A380 aircraft
FedEx has placed ten firm orders plus ten options for the freighter version of the A380. FedEx Express, a subsidiary of the FedEx Group, will receive the first aircraft from this firm order in 2008. Delivery of the last A380 is to take place in 2011. Thanks to this order, Airbus already has 95 firm commitments for its new superjumbo.
2 July 2002: EADS to supply electronics to US Armed Forces
EADS has received an order from the US American company VIASAT to supply core components for the future data transmission system MIDS (Multifunctional Information Distribution System) of the US Armed Forces. EADS is to supply power amplifiers for installation in MIDS terminals on US combat aircraft and sea- and land-based platforms.
25 June 2002: EADS selected as partner for US Coast Guard's Deepwater programme
EADS is one of the largest subcontractors in the successful team competing in the Integrated Coast Guard Systems programme. The joint venture by Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems and the Ingall shipyards of Northrop Grumman has been selected as prime contractor for the US Coast Guard's modernisation programme. The order volume of the Deepwater programme is $ 16.95 million. EADS is to supply radar components and the CASA CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft as well as systems to upgrade and modernise the Coast Guard's Eurocopter helicopter fleet.
5 June 2002: Bundeswehr names EADS as "preferred supplier" for the Herkules IT project
The German Bundeswehr announces that it is granting preferred supplier status to a consortium in which EADS is a partner. The purpose of this project is to modernise and standardise the IT and communications systems of the Bundeswehr. The order volume amounts to approx. € 6 billion over the whole 10-year duration of the project.
29 May 2002: Airbus A340-600 receives certification
After a total of 1,600 flight hours completed in more than 500 flights throughout the world, the JAA grants type certification to the A340-600. The first aircraft is due to be delivered to Virgin Atlantic Airways in July.
17 May 2002: Francisco Fernández Sáinz becomes new President and CEO of EADS CASA
Francisco Fernández Sáinz succeeds Alberto Fernández as head of the Military Transport Aircraft Division. At the same time he becomes a member of the EADS Executive Committee. Prior to this, Fernández Sáinz was General Manager of Airbus España.
10 April 2002: Astrium and the German Aerospace Centre sign an agreement on an earth observation satellite
Astrium and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) sign an agreement on the launch of a new geo information satellite designated TerraSAR-X in 2005. The total cost of development, construction and launch will amount to roughly € 130 million. This is the first earth observation satellite to be built through joint funding by industry and the public sector.
8 April 2002: First production Eurofighter completes maiden flight
The aircraft's first flight lasts 31 minutes. The test pilots subsequently give a very positive report. The German Luftwaffe is due to receive the first of the 180 aircraft ordered later in 2003.
22 March 2002: Roll-out of the first Tiger combat helicopter from series production
The roll-out of the first of a total 160 Tiger combat helicopters destined for the French and German armed forces takes place at the Eurocopter plant in Donauwörth. The total volume of the Tiger programme is € 3.9 billion.
18 March 2002: EADS announces operating results for 2001
Revenues reach € 30.8 billion, thus rising 27% compared to the previous year. This exceeds the original target of 20 %. By reaching € 1.7 billion, the EBIT (before depreciation and exceptional items) exceeds the targeted 15% and achieves a 21% increase. The Free Cash Flow is put at approx. € 0.8 billion and the appreciation in value achieved through synergy effects contributes over € 100 million to the EBIT.
5 March 2002: Clearance for Scalp naval cruise missile
The French Navy is the first customer for the Scalp naval cruise missile, supplied by the EADS Defence & Civil Systems (DCS) Division. The contract is worth several hundred million Euros. Scalp can be deployed from a variety of platforms and will provide long-range strike capabilities.
27 February 2002: Galileo satellite navigation system approved by EU
The EU Council of Transport Ministers grants its approval for the Galileo satellite navigation system. The project, in its two phases, will be worth over €3 billion and will create at least 100,000 jobs over the next five years. There will be 30 satellites in orbit around the Earth by 2008, which will be used to support all types of navigation, such as for aircraft and automobiles. The Galileo system will be compatible with the U.S. American military-controlled GPS system.
14 February 2002: Eurocopter introduces new helicopter model
The EC 145 makes its debut at the HAI Heli-Expo in Orlando, Florida, USA. This latest model is the result of a cooperative effort with Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The helicopter receives FAA certification on the same day.
11 February 2002: Successful first flight of the Airbus A340-500
The A340-500, the member of the Airbus family with the greatest range (8,650nm/ 16,050 km), successfully completes its first flight in Toulouse. In its standard version, the A340-500 will provide seating for 313 passengers.
23 January 2002: Airbus A380 production begins in Nantes
Production of the A380 begins at the Airbus plant at Nantes. On this day, not only is the traditional "first metal cut" accomplished with the cutting of an aluminium triform for the wing-to-fuselage junction, but also the first carbon fibre composite components are produced for the centre wing box, which on the A380 will measure approx. 7 x 7.8 x 2 metres and weigh 12 tonnes.
15 January 2002: Successful maiden flight for Airbus A318
The latest and smallest member of the A320 family successfully begins its flight test campaign at the Hamburg plant. So far, 114 of the 100-seat aircraft are on order from nine customers. Entry into service is scheduled for the third quarter of 2003.
