Nord Aviation Nord 1400

The ocean reconnaissance and emergency rescue amphibious flight boat Nord 1400 was designed by Nord Aviation for the French Marines. The machine was built by SNCAN (Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Nord) in Le Havre. The model had minor alterations and various engine types were tried and tested. In the series of 21 copies, the Standard N 1402 Noroit was the only one to be manufacturered. This model was one of the last flight boats that was constructed in large quantities in the West. The last delivery took place in 1956.

The prototype N 1400-01 Noroit flew for the first time at the beginning of January 1949 as a flight boat, powered by two Gnome-Rhone radial engines 14R with 1,600 PS each (1,178 kW). A top speed of 315 km/h was achieved. The travel speed was approximately over 200 km/h. The following model N 1400-02 had the first amphibious capability due to the accessory of a retractable tail wheel undercarriage. The N 1400-01 was also eventually retrofitted for this task.

On August 6, 1949, the N 1401 Noroit lifted off for the first time. It was powered by two SNECMA manufactured Junkers-Jumo engines with 1,800 PS each (1,325 kW). A second copy was manufactured from this model. Both aircrafts were tested in 1950 with Bristol-Hercules radial engines.

The first model in the series was the 1402 Noroit. The aircrafts were utilized in the Escadrille 5F of the French Marines as well as the pre-series models and unarmed prototype. The series model was powered by two 12 cylinder V-engines by SNECMA with 2,100 PS each.

The ocean reconnaissance and emergency rescue amphibious flight boat of the Nord 1400 series was designed as a cantilever creased-winged monoplane. The fuselage, which was constructed entirely from metal, could hold up to seven crew members. For rescue missions, there was a rear cabin with a sliding door on the left side. The dual-longeroned wings were made of metal. The rear was completed for this flight boat in a typical three-sectioned end with high and side rudders.
