The A310 is in service today with many of the world’s air forces and has proved its effectiveness in recent conflicts and humanitarian missions. The aircraft is flown in various configurations, including combi and flying hospital, and is the most cost-effective platform to be converted to an aerial refuelling tanker.

The German and Canadian governments have recognised this benefit and in 2004 were the first nations to receive A310s converted to multi-role tanker transports (MRTTs).

The A310 MRTT, with up to five additional fuel tanks in its lower deck, can be provided with a combination of wing pod and/or fuselage hose and drogue units and/or the EADS CASA advanced refuelling boom system (ARBS).
