Hello – my name is Jürgen, I joined the Military Air Systems Business Unit of EADS in 2000 where I am employed as a systems engineer – currently I work together with France and England on international projects. These involve the standardization of software interfaces for future airborne weapons systems. Furtheron, I am working on the standardization and on the description of hardware components, with the aim of cutting costs and improving performance in Eurofighter missions and further weapon systems.
My working day is very varied. Apart from usual business the company offers me business trips to international harmonization meetings of software and hardware groups, in which the diverse aspects of standards are precisely described and specified. In addition a lot of documentation is required, in other words standardization papers have to be written. Actualy we are involved in very interesting work on a System Demonstrator, where we will combine various avionic modules to present to our German and international customers.
The challenge here lies in introducing the latest technologies for avionics - additionally in co-ordinating the work with a number of colleagues – always a major challenge in international projects. There is a whole lot of new technology in avionics. The best thing about it is that we are aware that we are creating standards which will not land up on a desk somewhere, but will be used in Eurofighter or any future weapon system: standards which enjoy full company support.
I started studying engineering IT in 1995 – that was in Zwickau. In 1997 I was accepted to do practical training at the former Daimler-Benz Aerospace company, in the modular avionics division. I subsequently wrote a term paper and also a dissertation while at this division. Since then I have been a permanent member of the team, fully involved in this international project. At a very early stage I felt a certain affinity for the sector of military aircraft and then tried to get my foot in the door – preferably with a large, well-known company. EADS was the obvious answer, as it is a very large company which has a good reputation. So I soon joined EADS.
