Augmented Reality

Computer information that is projected into a person's field of vision serves to help them cope with complex situations. When complex structures have to be produced during manufacturing, virtual instructions help to ensure that processes run in the correct sequence. The instructions are projected into the worker's field of vision via an eyephone, thus augmenting the visible reality (hence 'augmented reality').

EADS Military Air Systems has developed a prototype for cable harness production. Here, cables are laid out on large cable boards, bundled together as cable harnesses and fitted with connectors. For Eurofighter, there are more than 60 different boards, on which looms consisting of up to 500 individual cables are laid. Here, the eyephone enables computer-generated information to be projected into the assembler's field of vision so that he can identify separate cables and their routing. A camera in the eyephone enables the computer to orientate according to markers on the board and detect where the assembler is currently directing his eyes and thus what he is working on. This AR application can be operated by voice control. And there is very little restriction to free movement: it is possible to work cable-free. The computer and peripheral equipment fit easily into a jacket pocket.
