StealthTo fly undetected over enemy territory: industry has been working for decades to fulfil this desire of military aircraft pilots. Nowadays, the success of a mission depends to a great extent on the ability to protect oneself against hostile sensors.
If one can be a step ahead in stealth technology, this can determine the success or failure of a mission. Stealth comprises all the passive measures taken to prevent or hinder detection by enemy sensors. The mastery of stealth technology requires enormous quantities of data to be processed and also places special demands on measurement technology. Up to now, signature measurements of concentrations of radar scatter, radar cross sections and focal points were for the most part carried out on indoor ranges, often on models. To expand the measurement spectrum, EADS Military Air Systems has set up an open-range radar cross section (RCS) measurement facility in Manching and a large indoor RQS facility at ASL Lemwerder. This facility in Manching is one of the few facilities in the world that is capable of carrying out such measurements on an entire aircraft. |
