EADS delivers first digital map generator for the A400M transport aircraft

  • Delivery of equipment right on schedule
  • Part of a product family of navigation and tactical information systems

Friedrichshafen, 06  February  2007

EADS Defence & Security Systems has handed over the first Digital Map Generator System (DMGS) for the A400M military transport aircraft to Airbus. This consignment was the first step in the delivery of a total of 192 systems. A further twelve Digital Map Generator Systems are planned for the transport aircraft ordered by South Africa.

The delivery of the first system is right on schedule. Airbus is performing a thorough system test on the first three of EADS Defence Electronics’ Digital Map Generator Systems in the aircraft environment in Toulouse. The DMGS is part of a product family of navigation and tactical information systems, which EADS Defence Electronics developed for many different types of aircraft. A slightly modified version of the system is already operating in the Eurofighter as well as in the Tiger and NH90 helicopters of the German Armed Forces, for example. It allows coloured topographic maps to be generated in real time and data specific to the mission to be superimposed over them.

“Our many years of experience with digital map generators, which offer a large amount of additional information, is based on developments and consignments for combat aircraft and military helicopters”, said Bernhard Gerwert, Head of EADS Defence Electronics. “This means the pilots of the helicopters and transport aircraft are given an instrument in the cockpit, allowing them to quickly and exactly determine their position, the flight path and the threat during a mission and react accordingly.”

EADS Defence Electronics is already involved in the A400M programme with the Mission Management Computer (MMC) and the self-protection system computer DAC (Defensive Aid Computer). In addition, EADS Defence Electronics has overall responsibility for the military systems in the A400M programme.

EADS Defence & Security Systems (DS) is a system solutions provider. It combines military air systems, missile systems, communications and intelligence systems, global security solutions as well as sensor and avionics systems into a single effective network. With 2005 revenues of € 5.6 billion, the Division employs 23,000.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2005, EADS generated revenues of € 34.2 billion and employed a workforce of about 113,000.
