Full control of information for naval operations

Paris, le 23  octobre  2000

From surveillance and assistance to decision-making for the control of weapon systems, EADS Matra Systemes & Information has the capabilities to provide global solutions to naval operations, answering the needs of Headquarters and user services in various navies. At Euronaval 2000, the French leader in C4I systems presents six product offerings at the heart of the Navy command chain: AIDCOM, dedicated to the command of Naval Forces; PDS/MPA for maritime patrol aircraft mission planning; PIROS and NAJIR 2000 for surveillance and fire control; and finally NGDS and DAGAIE Mk2 for electronic warfare.

Within the headquarters of an MCC (Maritime Component Commander), the AIDCOM system provides all the information-presentation and decision-making assistance resources required to conduct naval operations on a joint-forces theater level.
Connected to the various existing infrastructure communications resources, it also allows all the participants in the naval operations, whether on the ground or at sea, and regardless of their level in the chain of command, (ground-based or joint-services headquarters, ships at sea) to exchange and update in a coherent and coordinated manner all the information and data allowing them to carry out their duties as efficiently as possible.
The equivalent system in use by the French Navy, ACOM, operational since 1992, has been updated on an ongoing basis in order to take into account the evolution of operational requirements as well as technological advances. This system is installed on board approximately 50 combat ships (including the Charles de Gaulle nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, SSNs and SSBNs), as well as 10 ground-based centres. (Headquarters, naval operations centres, training centres, etc ...).

In its latest version recently installed on board the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, ACOM can be used for the following command-assistance functions:

  • Management (establishment and distribution) of the Recognized Maritime Picture
  • Display of the reference ground situation
  • Display of the air situation
  • Planning and Definition of Air missions
  • Display of meteorological and environment data
  • Management of documentary intelligence
  • Consultation and updating of data concerning the characteristics of ships and equipment
  • Management of operational information (organisation, logistics, ...)
  • Planning and control of the ship's missions

All these functions make ACOM a truly comprehensive system at the service of the Navy's High Command. It allows in particular to fully participate in the joint-forces command on an operations theater, taking into account the entire scope of resources being engaged (ships, aircraft, ground troops), while coordinating their action, in particular during amphibious operations.

ACOM is fully interoperable with French, NATO or US C3Is, through the use of ADatP-3 and OTH-T-GOLD messages and Intranet technologies.
ACOM features an intranet export function for the joint-forces operational situation in its area of responsibilities. This distribution feature provides multinational decision-makers, connected to the coalition global network through a simple browser, with a picture of the situation featuring sensitive areas that can be used to access operational information stored in the database.

The PDS/MPA system is the central mission planning, replay and analysis system for maritime patrol aircraft, similar to the CENTAC 2 system already used by Maritime Patrol Operations PC's in French Naval Aviation bases for the Atlantique 2 aircraft. This type of system provides operational users with valuable assistance before, during and after the flight, for the following major functions:

  • Updating and presentation of the overall tactical situation
  • Mission planning according to the level of intervention and type of aircraft
  • In-flight control of aircraft during the course of their mission
  • Post-mission analysis of the tactical information recorded during flight
  • Replay and simulation
  • Tactical and documentary intelligence (data base)
  • Drafting of mission reports

PIROS is an electro-optical surveillance system. Thanks to its day/night sighting and target detection/recognition capabilities, it is perfectly suited to take part in a number of missions performed by surface ships.
As an extension of the company's Electro-Optical Director (EOD) product range, PIROS takes advantage of a longstanding expertise in the design, development and manufacture of EOD shipborne systems. Along with a key representative of EADS family of EODs, NAJIR 2000, PIROS will add to the large number of EOD equipment presently in service worldwide (over 330 units). Its weight-efficient and compact design makes it particularly easy to install aboard small ships (coast guards, patrol craft…) as well as on land vehicles.

NAJIR 2000 is an electro optical fire control system suited for a various missions performed by surface ships ranging from self-defence operations to ship protection at anchor. Resulting like PIROS from the company's longstanding expertise gained in this domain, NAJIR 2000 can implement up to 4 optronic sensors providing high elevation angle pointing capability (+85°). Designed to be fully integrated in a combat system, it can be controlled by a single operator sitting at a multifunctions console.
Different kinds of missions can be carried out regardless of the type of target (air, sea or land targets) : sectorial search, auto track, aid to identification, " 3D " Target Designation delivery, simultaneous control of two guns. Moreover, NAJIR 2000 can engage a surface target from a bearing/range Target Designation information delivered by an external system (search radar).

In service with more than seventeen navies, the DAGAIE Mk2 system provides surface ships with protection against missiles, by neutralising hostile sensors prior to missile firing or by neutralising a missile homing system during its flight. It is capable of Electronic Warfare actions such as Confusion / Dilution, Distraction and Centroid seduction. Furthermore, when a jammer is available on board, DAGAIE Mk 2 provides the associated decoying for Rang Gate Pull off Seduction.

NGDS is a last-generation DAGAIE system, featuring circular and elevation mobility, offering a comprehensive response to new threat scenarios. As a modular system suited for all ship / mission profiles, it ensures protection against missile or torpedo threats of the latest generation, with a wide range of munitions.
