EADS Executive Committee takes important personnel decisions

Munich, 07  September  2000

  • Rauen new head of EADS Military Aircraft
  • Hartmann designated head of Airbus production in Toulouse

Amsterdam - Aloysius Rauen (43) is to become the new head of the Military Aircraft business unit of the EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company. Rauen, who currently heads Corporate Strategy at DaimlerChrysler AG in Stuttgart, will take on his new function at Munich on 15 September 2000, EADS announced in Munich on Thursday.

Rauen will succeed Dr. Karl-Heinz Hartmann (49), whom the EADS Executive Committee appointed as deputy head of production of the Airbus Division at their latest meeting in Amsterdam. Hartmann is to be based at Toulouse, where he will support the head of Airbus production Gerhard Eisen (59) during the integration phase before assuming full responsibility for Airbus production at a later stage.

"It was most fortunate that we were able to obtain Karl-Heinz Hartmann for this post at Airbus. He already has wide-ranging experience reaching back over many years in Airbus production, where he enjoyed a highly successful career between 1981 and 1998," stated EADS Co-Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rainer Hertrich.

"We are very glad to have Aloysius Rauen back on board, declared Philippe Camus, Co-CEO of EADS. "From 1995 to 1999 Rauen already had extraordinary success as the head of Dasa's Military Aircraft business unit. His task will now be to give further impetus to European integration in the area of military aircraft construction and to strengthen Europe's position in this field."

One of Rauen's most important tasks in the coming months will be the negotiations on the memorandum of association between EADS and the Italian state holding company Finmeccanica for formation of the multinational military aircraft company which had been agreed on in May. In this new company Rauen is to occupy the position of CEO, which is to be filled by an appointee from EADS.

Aloysius Rauen is an aerospace engineer. He began his career in 1983, when he joined the Helicopter Development section of Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB). After spending a year as a member of the "Aeronautics Team" of the European Commission in Brussels, in 1989 Rauen became Chief of Staff and Assistant to the CEO of MBB. In 1991, he was appointed director of the Tornado programme. Subsequently he became director of the Airbus plant at Nordenham from 1992 to 1995, before he took over as president of the Military Aircraft Division of DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG (Dasa, Munich) in 1995. From early 2000 on, Rauen had been head of Corporate Strategy at DaimlerChrysler AG in Stuttgart.

Dr. Karl-Heinz Hartmann studied Mechanical Engineering. He embarked on his career in aeronautical engineering in 1981 when he joined MBB in Bremen. In 1984, he became responsible for Production Steering at the Airbus plant in Varel. In 1990, Hartmann was appointed director of Planning and Programmes at the headquarters of Deutsche Airbus GmbH in Hamburg, and in 1991 he became plant director at Munich/Neuaubing. In 1995, he took on the same task at the Airbus plant in Stade. A further step in Hartmann's career took him to South America, where he became president of Mercedes-Benz of Argentina in 1998. From January 2000, he headed Dasa's Military Aircraft business unit.

In the EADS Military Aircraft business unit, the most important programme comprises the development and production of the European fighter aircraft Eurofighter. In addition, the unit is a participant in the tri-national fighter aircraft programme Tornado and is also currently working on a concept for a high-performance trainer/light combat aircraft (Mako). In Manching, EADS operates a support centre for the F-4 Phantom, Tornado and MiG-29 fighter aircraft and for various transport and mission aircraft (C-160 Transall, Bréguet Atlantic, E 3-A AWACS). In Getafe (Spain), final assembly of the 87 Eurofighter aircraft destined for the Spanish Air Force is taking place. In addition, support tasks for combat and mission aircraft in service with the Spanish Armed Forces (Mirage F-1, AV-8B, Harrier II Plus, F/A-18E Super Hornet, C-130, P-3 Orion, C-101, F-5) are carried out at that site. In 1999, the Military Aircraft business unit achieved sales worth 1.3 billion euros. EADS Military Aircraft employs 7,400 people at its Augsburg, Getafe, Manching and Ottobrunn sites.
